Letharia vulpina

Letharia vulpina

If you look closely and see little projectiles along the branches, those are called isidia and are charateristic of this species. A common look alike is Letharia columbiana which has large brown discs called apothecia. But to make things difficult, remember that there’s a third species this could be – the newly described species Letharia lupina – but only TLC chemical and genetic sequencing tests can determine the difference, for now we’ll just say that if it has isidia it is L. vulpina if it has brown apothecia it is L. columbiana :)
